Would totally recommend and I would definitely not sell it for $600. I'm probably going to keep this computer for another 5+ years unless it dies. Ended up getting the battery, keyboard, trackpad, case, fans, and potentially the monitor (it looked new or was cleaned extremely well) for $300 which isn't too bad to make it feel like new. Took it in to the apple store and they diagnosed it as a swelling battery (seems like a problem for macs so if it looks like your case is fat, get it checked out). Only downside that happened is part of the trackpad stopped clicking and one of the fans starting running crazy loud. The only thing it cannot run are new video games or if you are deep into ML but old games still work great (I played GTA V on it ok when that came out). Can run chrome, mysql server, web servers, and personal programs without breaking a sweat. I’ve seen reviews of other adapters on amazon where users have managed to get with the same mbp and similar switchresx settings.I've got a late 2013 15" MBP with a 2.6 GHz Intel Core i7, 16GB of ram, 512GB SSD, and a NVIDIA GeForce GT 750M, and have been using it for 5 years now it and it is a great laptop. If changing the cable has no effect I’d be interested to know if you think the mdp->hdmi adapter could be at fault. It does seem though that some people have been able to get 60hz with a combination of mini display adapter 1.2, using this app called switchResX and disabling system integrity on new installs. With SwitchResX it is totally easy to match your screen resolution to the best for any app or use. It seems most people who have MacBooks have given up on HDMI since Apple doesn't show 60hz on 4k but only 1080p. Yes, it is possible to drive a 4k Display with an early 2013 and even 2012 Retina Macbook. If these sound like possible cable issues then hold fire and i’ll report back in a couple of days and let you know how I get on. SwitchResX - Complete Control over your Monitor Current version is 4.12.2. If I use SwitchResX to change it to 4k 30Hz, I see the 'High Dynamic Range' option enabled in the Display settings, but when I switch back to 60Hz it goes away. follow the directions on SwitchResXs website for disabling system. Switching to 1080p fixes the chroma issue. For example, the older 2013 macbook pro will output at 4k at 60hz through my. With regards to 4:4:4 chroma, even dropping down to 25Hz is no help, it’s clearly running in 4:2:2. I’ve had a further play and I can actually get an output at 60Hz after tweaking switchresx ( ) but the picture loses all sharpness similar to that seen at 30Hz. Regarding bpc, i’m using the “millions of colors” option in switchresx. Just in case I’ve ordered a new cable ( …) so will give this a try as soon as it arrives. Regarding the cable I’m using, i’m not sure of it’s origins but it’s marked as a high speed cable. Anything above 8bpc is limited to a refresh rate. That said, would you be able to let us know the specific HDMI cable that you are using? I’d like to confirm that it is HDMI 2.0 capable in order to support and 4:4:4 chroma.Īlso, would you happen to know the color depth “bpc” setting that your graphic settings our running? Our adapter can only support with 4:4:4 chroma at an 8bpc as defined by HDMI 2.0 specification ( …). As it seems you have found, using SwitchResX or other 3rd party applications must be used on previous Mac systems in order to create a custom resolution to achieve 4K at 60Hz, however, in our experience some customers have better results than others. Release the shift key when you see the 'spinning gear' on the startup screen. When you hear the startup tone, hold down the shift key. To do that, turn your system off, then restart. Unfortunately, is tricky within Mac OS and we may not be able to resolve all of the issues you are experiencing, but I am happy to help investigate what may be happening. You will have to remove the defined resolution from the macOS monitor profile file that SwitchResX had modified.
